Honouring Our Country - National Symbols & Emblems (Lesson 1)

How do we show respect and loyalty for our country?

SPECIFIC OBJS.

 By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

1. Develop working definitions and use correctly the following concepts: emblem, flag, coat-of-arms, symbols, nationhood, anthem, crest, bearing, motto, patriotism

2. Explain what national symbols are and analyze their importance to nationhood.

3. Identify and describe the national symbols of Jamaica

CONTENT SUMMARY

A symbol is a representation of something. Symbols are use to represent a particular brand.

Jamaica’s symbols and emblems include the Jamaican flag, the Coat of Arms, the National bird – Doctor Bird, the national fruit-Ackee, our Motto-Out Of Many One People, the national flower-Lignum Vitae, National Tree- Blue Mahoe, National Anthem, National Pledge, National Song. These emblems identify us as a country.

The flag should never be used as decoration. A worn flag must be privately burned. The flag must never be flown lower than any other flag except at foreign embassies. It must be flown at half mast for official mourning.

What is the significance of this crest to the school community? What is the  reason for establishing the crest and other symbols for the school? Is the crest the same for every school?

Try to formulate reasons for the importance of creating a crest in school, and how it sets us apart from other schools.

Where in the school can you identify the  crest ? What does the motto mean?

Does our country have special symbols as well?
